Islamic University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam (IUR) opens academic year 2017–2018 with celebrating 20-years anniversary
On September 14th the Islamic University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam officially opened its academic year 2017-2018 with celebrating its 20-years anniversary.
The programme was attended by among others the Chairman of the Foundational Board Dr. A. Erbalcı and the Members H.E. Shaykh S.A. Al Hashimi (Advisor Religious Affairs for the President of the United Arab Emirates), mr. M. Erdebil, mr. N. Çelenk, mr. A. Kweens, the Members of the Supervisory Board, the Consul-General of the Turkish Republic S. Ayyıldız, the Chairman of the Dutch Islamic Federation (NIF) M. Erdoğan, representatives of several embassies and academicians of (theological) faculties.
In his opening speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akgündüz paid attention to important social-cultural and educational topics: “As higher education institution, we attach value to our social-cultural responsibility and role, and to the educational shaping of islamic theologians for the future of the Netherlands. I believe that the battle against radicalization shouldn’t be funded on fear, but that the solution against it consists solely from education, research and science. In this way we strive to become a leading research institute in the West, where topics in interreligiosity and interculturality are being discussed and the research plays a key role.”
The Rector also pointed out the current cooperation agreements with higher education institutions abroad in the scope of international research and the mobility of students and staff.
The Chairman of the Foundational Board, Dr. A. Erbalcı, spoke the following words: “In Rotterdam, there is a sunrise today. It was the same 20 years ago. These sun rays will not only reach the Netherlands; it will reach the whole of Europe and enlighten it. The Islamic University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam has, from the moment that it has opened its doors for students until today, delivered many valuable contributions, has educated students, has showed its presence, and most of the important has taken the responsibility and the role to become a representative of the Muslim community. With the opening of the new academic year today, I wish all the students a blessed educational year. We as Foundational Board will, both material as immaterial, always provide our support for the well-being and for the future of this educational institution. We will do the utmost for educating our students as the most intellectual, knowledgeable, reliable and sincere Muslims.”
H.E. Shaykh S.A. Al Hashimi (Advisor Religious Affairs for the President of the United Arab Emirates), shared the message “The Islamic University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam is the first accredited higher education institution in its kind on the European continent. This educational institution is and delivers an added value to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in terms of science and in terms of the freedom of speech, education and religion.”
The Islamic University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam starts the new academic year with 50 new students and has in total more than 300 students enrolled into the bachelor- and master programme.
