Entry requirements to Islamic Theology

Islamic Theology

Applications for the admission are carefully evaluated by the admission commission of the programme. The admission Commission oversees the applications are whether or not met all entry requirements as shown below. Click Aanmelding en Inschrijving (admission and registration in Dutch).

Admission Conditions

A student who wishes to start in the Islamic Theology programme

  1. has a HAVO diploma or similar degree;
  2. masters Dutch (NT2 level);
  3. has a residence permit;
  4. has sufficient financial means to pay for the programme costs.

1) HAVO diploma or similar degree

To be admitted to the programme, the student is in possession of one of the following diplomas or certificates:

  • VWO-diploma. A diploma of “voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs (VWO)” with or without profile designation gives direct access to the propaedeutic year (the first registration year) of the programme.
  • HAVO-diploma. A diploma of “hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs” (HAVO) (higher general secondary education) with or without profile designation provides access to the propaedeutic year (the first registration year) of the programme after an additional examination. The examination Commission lays down a further examination to determine whether the person concerned satisfies requirements as stated in those similar to candidates who are in possession of a VWO-diploma, in accordance with article 7.28 of the WHW. The therefore needed supplementary courses must have been successfully finished before the start of the first year of registration. The additional examination includes also basis knowledge of Islam, the Qor'an and Islamic history and general world orientation.
  • HBO (University of Applied Sciences) or WO (University) diploma. The possessor of a Bachelor 's diploma, a master's diploma or a certificate or diploma of propaedeutic year of any Ba programme that is obtained from a Dutch university or university of applied sciences  in the Netherlands or outside can be admitted to programme. The examination Commission determines whether the student can be admitted to the pre-undergraduate (propaedeutic year) or the post-undergraduate (the second and third years of the programme), on the basis of documents submitted, the list of modules from which the student has got credits. The examination Commission assesses the foreign HBO or university degrees according to the Nuffic directives.
  • MBO diploma. A MBO diploma (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs) at level 4 provides access to the propaedeutic year after an entrance examination. The possessor of a MBO diploma (level 4) must be 21 years or older.
  • International (foreign) diplomas. Also students with foreign qualifications which are comparable to the Dutch VWO can apply for this programme. When a student with a foreign diploma asks for admission to the programme, the Examination Commission lays down an investigation to determine the Dutch equivalent of that international diploma. This investigation takes places on the basis of advice or directives of professional organizations such as Nuffic. The minimum level of the diploma must be equal to the Dutch VWO diploma.

Who is not in possession of one of the abovementioned diplomas or certificates, can access the Ba programme through an entrance exam.

2) Dutch language proficiency (NT2 level)

Students should be able to read and understand books, lectures, to participate in lectures and seminars in Dutch at a level of at least NT-II. Therefore, in admission to a Dutch spoken programme on the basis of a foreign diploma, a so-called NT2-II-diploma is always an additional requirement for foreign students.  Dutch language proficiency can be demonstrated by:

  1. The state examination Dutch as a second language program, level 2.
  2. The final examination of Dutch language courses of Dutch universities  or HBO’s for non-Dutch-speaking prospective students or
  3. The Dutch language examination which for this purpose is taken under the responsibility of Voorbereiding Hoger Onderwijs (VHO)

At the moment of initial registration for a Ba programme, the proof of the Dutch language proficiency cannot be older than 24 months.

Please refer to the Dutch language courses: Dutch language courses.

3) Arabic Language (preference)

Given the nature of the Bachelor of Islamic sciences, the University offers a Ba programme in which the mastery of the Arabic language as a source language plays undeniable role. Preferably the students with sufficient Arabic language knowledge and mastery will be admitted to the programme. Students with an Arabic language deficiency will be admitted to the programme with the condition that they first finished the preparatory phase (intensive) Arabic language courses. These courses are provided by the Islam Institute (ISIN) of the University. The preparatory phase lasts up to two years.

4) Residence permit

The academic programmes of the IUR attract a lot of attention of the foreign students. To be admitted to the courses of the IUR, students must be in possession of a valid residence permit in the Netherlands or in one of the countries of the European Union (EU).  A "residence permit" means a (permanent) residence permit on the basis of family reunion; a (permanent) residence permit on the basis of "recognized refugee"; a residence permit on the basis of "employment contract", which is valid at least for 6 months; a residence permit other than the above-mentioned statutes, that is valid at least for more than 1 year, but is suitable for to study in Netherlands.

5) Basic knowledge of Islam (preference)

For admission to the Bachelor of Islamic sciences, a basic knowledge of Islam is desirable. Preferably students with basic knowledge of Islam will be admitted to the programme. Students, who miss this basic knowledge, follow the missing courses in the preparatory phase. These courses are provided by ISIN.

6) Financial resources

Due to the fact that the some programmes of the IUR are still not accredited by the NVAO, the students of these programmes do not make use of the student financial aid from the Government. The students of these programmes should regulate their financial resources provisionally themselves. The University is not liable for the financial means for its students. That is why the IUR asks the availability of financial resources as an additional requirement to the admission. The University can intercede for finding a scholarship or a small job.
