Title : Paroles Sublimes. L’exégèse des sagesses d’Ibn ‘Atâ’ Allâh as-Sakandarî. 3 volumes
Author : Shaykh Mohammad Saïd Ramadân Al Bouti
Language : French
Publisher : Sagesse d’Orient, Paris 2011.

This book is the first translation into a European language of one of Shaykh Mohammad Saïd Ramadan Al Bouti’s major works: “Al-Hikam al-‘Atâ’iyya Sharh wa Tahlil” which stands in Arabic in 4 volumes of approximately 600 pages each. This contemporary Syrian scholar who is considered among the most distinguished and most influential Sunni authoritative references, though he occupies no official function as such, is well-known throughout the Muslim world and above for his interest in inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue and for his great contribution to enrich the Islamic sciences with more than 60 books on different subject matters ranging from jurisprudence (fiqh), to history and civilization, to theology, philosophy and metaphysics, …etc. He has even shown interest in literature, psychology and sociology. He has travelled all around the world to participate in hundreds of conferences, seminars, symposia and the IUR had the honor to host him in one of these occasions.

In this book, Al Bouti explains and analyzes the “Book of Wisdom” or the “Aphorisms” of another very important Muslim author of the late 13th Century, Ibn ‘Atâ’ Allâh as-Sakandarî (d.  709H/ 1309 CE). This shaykh was the major spokesman of the Shadhilî tariqa, and the first who unfolded in books the teachings of his masters, and produced in a concisely brilliant style one of the most commented and most studied books in Sufi, and more generally, in Islamic literature : “Al Hikam al ‘Atâ’iyya” in which he concentrated in hundreds of aphorisms the teachings  inspired by a high and profound understanding of the realities of Islam, worthy of billions of hours of studies. And in fact, even though “Al Hikam al ‘Atâ’iyya” can today be printed in a pocket-form book not exceeding a hundred pages of small size, it has been since its apparition continuously widely studied, commented and explained by a large number of scholars well-versed in the different religious Islamic sciences, of which Al Bouti’s work is the most recent.

“Paroles Sublimes” is thus the first and most significant contribution to explain the meanings of these “hikam” in French, through a methodology that respects the Quran and the Sunna and traces back the sources of these aphorisms to the scriptural holy texts that inspired them, showing how respectful their author was of the prophetic and Quranic teachings, although some of his aphorisms might look to an inattentive reader quite in contradiction with them, if he doesn’t examine them thoroughly. The reader of “Paroles Sublimes” will feel the benevolent tone of Al Bouti’s explanations and his constant concern to take him by hand and lead him to a better understanding, and indeed a deepening, of the senses of Islamic precepts. It is an invitation to a journey into one’s profoundest self and a call to discover the treasuries within, upon which only a true and sincere spirituality can shed light.
